the known world before
his early death in

GREEK & PERSIAN EMPIRES AT WAR
In the previous century Greece was invaded
by the Persian Empire. Although the Persians
had since been driven out, many Greeks wanted
revenge. Alexander, King of Macedon, son
of Philip II, was no exception. In 334 BC,
Alexander crossed into Asia with an army
of Phalanx foot soldiers and his elite Companion
Cavalry. He destroyed a forward Persian army
at the Granicus River and pushed further
into Persian territory.
ALEXANDER DEFEATS PERSIANS AT ISSUS
Alexander met the Persian King, Darius III,
and his army in battle at Issus the following
year. The Companion Cavalry formed up in
two groups, on either side of the infantry
in the center. The Persian army, outnumbering
the Greeks, were deployed on the opposite
side of a river. With a mighty battle cry,
Alexander led his charging cavalry across
the river and into the Persian ranks. The
enemy's left flank crumbled. Alexander sustained
a flesh wound in the attack, but bravely
fought on, redirecting his troops towards
the Persian mercenaries in the center. The
Greek Phalanxes pressed in, ripping through
Persian lines and causing chaos. Darius fled
the battlefield, leaving his family to be
captured by the Greeks.
EMPIRE EARTH
This fine portrait of Alexander astride his
horse graces the box of Empire Earth, a real-time strategy computer game developed

forces at the battle of Issus and other famous
