Oil Painting Restoration and Conservation
by Mark Churms
Apart from being an artist of merit, Mark
Churms has also specialized in restoring
old paintings since the early 1990's. Old
or antique paintings, artwork with holes,
or rips, dull / dirty or stained varnish,
can be brought back to life through a variety
of picture restoration techniques. By employing
the services of Mark Churms you will also
have the palette of an expert artist to accurately
color match any repairs and even re-paint
missing entire pieces of your painting. As
a skilled historical and military artist
Mark adds historical detail to his restoration
skills (which is important when large areas
are in need of touching up or if completely
missing sections are to be filled in with
accurate detail).
Restoring each painting is a unique process.
There are a wide variety of mediums, varnishes,
canvases, boards and other surfaces on which
paintings have been created. Environmental
conditions, handling, age and quality of
the original pigments can affect the way
painting surfaces may have deteriorated,
requiring different restoration techniques
to be applied. Some paintings will need lengthy
cleaning, re backing, mold treatments, stripping
off and reapplying new varnish. Others may
need holes filled, entire areas re-painted
or simply cleaned; some may need all of the
above! The good news is that even the worst
looking painting (rolled up, cracked, dirty,
stained and faded, even with entire pieces
missing) can often be restored to a beautiful
finish and original vibrant colors!
Paintings can be restored to your tastes
with either permanent fixes or conservation
repairs that are hidden yet reversible. We
will document the process to show the various
stages of the restoration of your painting
and produce a text and photographic report
which will indicate the techniques and materials
used in the restoration process (Some damaged
picture frames can also be restored or if
too badly damaged can be suitably replaced).
If you are inteterested in having a painting
that you own restored please email us photographs
(showing front, back and sides, along with
close-ups of any obvious damage), indicate
the dimensions of the painting (and or frame)
and approximate retail value and we will
email a no-obligation-quote for various levels
of conservation that may be appropriate.
