USS Princeton CVL-23 burns furiously from Japanese bombs as the USS Langley CVL-27, successor to United States Navy's very first aircraft carrier of the same name, launches another Hellcat on CAP (Combat Air Patrol).

LANGLEY II AT LEYTE
U.S.S. Langley CVL-27

October 24th 1944. Off northern Philippines, Pacific Ocean.

USS Langley II launches another Hellcat on Combat Air Patrol as USS Princeton (CVL-23) burns in the distance. Whilst taking part in the attacks on Luzon airfields to support the American Leyte invasion, enemy planes from Clark and Nichols fields locate Task Group Three TG 38.3. The Princeton is hit by a lone Japanese dive-bomber and bursts into flames. Huge explosions rip through the deck of this unfortunate aircraft carrier, and also inflict severe casualties on the crew of USS Birmingham (CL-62), which comes alongside to fight the fires.

Independence Class Aircraft Carriers at War

USS Langley, an 11,000-ton Independence Class aircraft carrier, was built in Camden, New Jersey by New York Shipbuilding Corp. Though she was originally ordered as the light cruiser Fargo (CL-85), by the time her keel is laid in 1942, she has already become a Light Fleet Aircraft carrier, using the original cruiser hull and machinery. She is finally commissioned in August 1943 and enters combat in the Marshalls operation of January 1944. During the next four months, her planes assault Japanese positions in the central Pacific and western New Guinea. She participates in the attack on the Marianas, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, the Palaus Operation, raids on the Philippines, Formosa and the Ryukyus, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
