Firelight flickers as a prehistoric, caveman
warrior charges an unseen enemy. He is ready
to strike with flint pointed spear. This
early human warrior is stripped for action,
wearing only a skin loincloth. The cave walls
are decorated with paintings and pictures
representing the life of the hunter-gatherer
community. Perhaps he is defending his tribe
against a ferocious Stone Age saber-toothed
tiger, or is attacking an enemy cave, locked
in early tribal warfare?
STONE AGE WARRIORS 50,000 - 5,000 B.C.
Many advances in stone working and toolmaking
took place during the Stone Age, resulting
in a plethora of specialized tools. One particularly
important innovation was "hafting"
- the attachment of a handle to an existing
tool, such as a stone blade. The first hafted
implements were spears. Tipped with fine
stone points, or "microliths,"
the resulting weapons were sharp, durable
and deadly. Spears were used primarily for
fishing and bringing down large game, but
spearmen surely employed them against human
enemies as well.
Religious practices also evolved during this
epoch, becoming increasingly complex and
sophisticated. People's awareness of their
own mortality — humans in the Stone Age lived,
on average, less than 30 years — brought
about the practices of ancestor worship and
ritual burial. Early forms of shamanism also
developed. Holy men called shamans were believed
to have the power to commune with spirits.
Rock and cave paintings from this period
suggest that they may have practiced rituals
akin to magic to heal the sick, for example,
or ensure a successful hunt, or bring about
favorable weather.
The presence of such individuals indicates
that human societies were diversifying, with
different people filling different roles.
As societies grew in complexity, the need
for organized leadership increased. By the
close of the Stone Age, hierarchical social
structures were leading to centralized authority
and the origination of government. Evidence
of this trend has been inferred from ancient
settlement patterns found in Greece and Southern
France, and on the Iberian peninsula.

All gladiators were initially know as Samnites
in the early days of this vicious "sport"
as the Samnite people were the traditional
enemy of Rome. Later, as the games evolved,
new titles and styles of fighting were developed
for the entertainment of the ancients. This
gladiator has survived to fight another day
in the arena.

The Army of French Prince Louis lays siege
to Dover Castle. English King John (of Robin
Hood fame and brother to King Richard the
Lion Heart) was very unpopular with his barons,
many of whom rebelled and invited the French
royal prince to become King. Louis assembled
a large fleet and attacked Dover castle,
held by Knights Loyal to John, the Plantagenet
King. Dover was the key castle on the English
Channel coast, sitting high on the White
Cliffs above the port below. At sunset we
see some of King John's knights ride out
to attack the siege engines of the attackers
as French catapults (siege tower, trebuchet,
magonels and perriers) hurl greek fire and
other missiles at the castle walls. Though
Louis eventually broke thought the walls
of the wooden barbican and later destroyed
one of the main, stone gate towers behind,
he was unable to capture the castle.

As the population of the thriving town of
Atlit (in modern day Israel) flees to the
protection of the castle walls; a brother-knight
who is commanded to patrol the shoreline,
approaches. The Templar garrison prepares
to defend the fortress against the approaching
muslim army. In fact the castle will withstand
this coming assault and will not be abandoned
by the Templars until after the fall of Acre
to the Mameluke Sultan of Egypt in 1291.
The Templars are the first monastic order
of Crusader Knights. Founded in the early
twelfth century when Hugh de Payens and eight
comrades swore to protect Christian Pilgrims
of the Catholic Church traveling from Europe
to the Holy sites in "Outremer"(the
land across the sea) against attacks from
bands of Muslim raiders. The order is based
at the captured Al-Asqua Mosque (which is
commonly known as the "Temple of Solomon"
by Europeans of the day). The mosque is given
to the order by King Baldwin of the kingdom
of Jerusalem in 1120. It is located near
to the famous Dome of The Rock, on the Temple
Mount and is reputedly the site of the first
Jewish Temple in Jerusalem, completed by
King Solomon in 953 BC, and finally destroyed
by Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar in 586
BC.

At about 1pm, December 13th, Caldwell's Brigade
of Federal Infantry, continues Hancock's
Division's fruitless assault on the Confederate
Lines. Georgian Infantry Soldiers of Philips
Legion and 24th regiment return fire from
behind the cover stone wall and sunken lane
at the battle of Fredericksburg. The blue-coated
soldiers advance to the Stratton House and
orchard (center) and beyond (including a
handful of 5th New Hampshire Volunteers with
their blue, State Flag) only to be cut down
by the rebels' guns. The green flag of the
Irish brigade can be seen along with other

Captain Squires' Confederate guns, 1st Company,
Washington Artillery confront Griffin's Federal
assault at Fredericksburg, December 13th
1862, 3 pm.
The defensive works for the confederate artillery
deployed on the heights overlooking Fredericksburg
were built by General Lee's military engineers
but are now piled even higher with earth
by the artillerymen that have to fight within
them! The 9 inch rifle (captured Union ordnance)
and 10 pound Parrot (Richmond make ( foreground)
continue to belch out smoke as they pound
away at Union forces and keep them pinned
down. The southern gunners are starting to
run low on ammunition; these two cannons
have been in action most of the day whilst
under fire from enemy rifles and now artillery
shot and shell.
Near the Willis House (bottom left) Captain
Squires is struck in the chest by a spent
rifle bullet; stunned but not badly wounded,
he falls in to the arms Lieutenant Colonel
William M. Owen. One soldier lies dead (Falconer
- shot behind the ear) behind the guns and
some wounded men lie in the corner of the
earthworks. Despite the causalities the brave
crews (assisted by some infantry) continue
their deadly work on the muddy ground.
In the lane below, Confederate foot-soldiers
of various infantry units (18th Georgia,
27th North Carolina) fire their rifles and
muskets from the cover of the stone wall
beneath the Washington Artillery's exposed
position on the hill-top. Now, 16th Georgia
Infantry come to support their comrades,
hurtling down the terraced slope to the mud
road. In some places the rebel soldiers are
4 or more ranks deep, huddled behind the
protection of the wall. In the distant lane
we can see troops of 2nd South Carolina ,
24th Georgia and 46th North Carolina Infantry
holding their positions too, near the Innis'
(center left (still standing today)) and
Stephens' houses (center). Mayre's House
(also known as Brompton (still standing today)),
where Colonel J.B. Walton commander of the
Washington Artillery had his headquarters,
is atop the distant heights (far left), the
red brick Stratton House (occupied by Union
forces (still standing today)) is in the
middle distance (center right) next to the
fairgrounds with the town of Fredericksburg
in the far background (right). Despite the
"unerring fire" of Walton's guns,
more Union soldiers enter the fray and attempt
in vain to push the Confederates from their
impregnable defensive line. And so the fight
continues as the setting sun casts a wintery
shadow over the field of carnage and valor.

Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and his
elite 7th Cavalry regiment, under a hail
of arrows, urge their tired horses toward
"Last Stand Hill". Custer spurs
his trusted mount "Vic" forward,
as he fires a round from his British Bulldog
revolver into the surging tide of Sioux and Cheyenne warriors.
CUSTER'S LAST STAND
It is approximately 4:45 pm on Sunday, June
25, 1876. On the high ground above the Little
Big Horn River is Montana Territory, the
final scene of a drama that has been unfolding
since early that morning is about to be played
out. Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong
Custer and some eighty men of Companies C,
E, F, I, and L of the Seventh U.S. Cavalry
are advancing into history as part of "Custer's
Last Ride."
7th CAVALRY MASSACRED BY INDIAN BRAVES
Here, Custer stops to fire towards the advancing
Native Americans whose arrows are already
starting to take their toll. Lieutenant W.W.
Cooke, with his distinctive whiskers, is
in the group to the right of Custer, and
Sergeant Robert Hughes, who is carrying Custer's
personal guidon, follows him. The men remain
fairly calm against the indians, although
one of the guidon bearers has just been hit.
Custer's mount, Vic, is beginning to sense
the fear that will soon overtake the troopers.
The men taking part in "Custer's Last
Ride" were doomed, but they became a
part of one of the most enduring legends
of the West-Custer's Last Stand.

·RIDE TO DESTINY By Mark Churms |
June 25th, 1876, Captain Myles Walter Keogh
rides into action with the 7th Cavalry at
the Battle of The Little Big Horn. His horse,
'Comanche' will be the only survivor of Custer's
Last Stand!
Native American Indians Wipe Out Custer's
Command
On the afternoon of June 25th, 1876, Captain
Myles Walter Keogh forms his troopers along
a ridge overlooking the Little Bighorn River
in the Montana Territory. Earlier in the
day, Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong
Custer had given Keogh, as senior captain,
command of three of the five companies of
soldiers of his Seventh Cavalry. These men
would ride into destiny at the Battle of
the Little Bighorn. In columns of four, Keogh's
own"I"Company leads companies "C"
and "L" past their expatriate Irish
commander, who prepares to establish a line
of defense against the hundreds of Sioux
and Cheyenne warriors streaming up from the
village to his left.
Sioux and Cheyenne Warriors, Victorious!
In a matter of minutes, overwhelming numbers
of Indians would overrun Keogh's command,
routing the troopers and killing them in
place. Keogh's warhorse, Comanche, was severely
wounded and left for dead.
After the battle, soldiers from General Alfred
Terry's Montana Column arrived on the battlefield
and discovered Comanche still alive. The
animal was nursed back to health and proclaimed
by special orders of the Seventh Cavalry
as the very embodiment "Of the desperate
struggle against overwhelming odds, of the
hopeless conflict, and heroic manner in which
all went down that day."

- THE ORIGINAL 16" x 20&quo
and fight to eliminate the human virus on
planet earth?
NANO AGE 21000-2200o A.D.
The ongoing technological process of miniaturization
attained its ultimate objective in the Nano
Age. Nanotechnology had its first successes
in the early 21st Century in medical applications.
But subsequent improvements in imaging and
manipulation techniques allowed for the creation
of "nanomachines," with sizes measured
in billionths of a meter. Working in concert,
these amazing machines could theoretically
build anything, atom-by-atom, including copies
of themselves.
Programming the trillions of nanomachines
needed to make a sizable object in a reasonable
amount of time was a major hurdle to overcome.
The solution involved developing a simple
coding system — not unlike DNA — that provided
the instructions on how to make any type
of compound. Larger structures were then
assembled from the compounds. Quantum computers
— the smallest and most powerful computers
yet devised — handled the astronomical amount
of data involved.
Nanomachines were soon being used to build
a wide variety of things. Biological structures
were merged with mechanical structures, creating
cyborgs and other hybrids. The designs for
mechanized military units — already highly
successful — received a host of internal
refinements that made them even more effective.
Researchers developed artificial viruses
that could be used for everything from medical
treatments to mind control. The only restriction
was that objects first had to be described
on an atomic level, which was usually a time-consuming
process.
The other major development of the period
was learning to synthesize "negative
matter," an exotic substance with extraordinary
physical properties. First hypothesized in
the 20th Century, the formulation of the
Theory of Everything in the 21st Century
brought negative matter into clear focus.
Applying the theory allowed humans to do
something previously considered impossible:
travel through time. Nanotechnology provided
the means to magnify a phenomenon known as
the Casimir effect to open a wormhole — a
tunnel through the fabric of space-time.
Once enough negative matter was synthesized
to enlarge and stabilize the wormhole, objects
were able to pass through. As soon as other
technological barriers were overcome (for
example, protecting the fragile human body
from the extreme forces involved and controlling
where the "far end" of the wormhole
appeared) time travel became a reality.
In the Nano Age, humankind gradually gained
mastery over matter and energy, time and
space. Yet despite these achievements and
the virtually limitless possibilities they
presented, life on Earth continued much the
way it had over the previous 500,000 years.
Though a mere speck in the cosmos, Earth
remained the cradle of human civilization.

Earth" Computer Game.
