BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Black troops of 30th USCT (United States Colored Troops) color guard enthusiastically advance up the Plank road, at the double. 23rd USCT are in line of battle on the right (with their backs to the observer) firing on the Confederate dismounted cavalry. Brigadier General FERRERO and his staff are in the center/left. The exhausted, white troopers of 2nd Ohio Volunteer Cavalry (chased to this position, behind the Plank Rd by the advancing confederate cavalry) cheer the arrival of the Union?s negro soldiers who have come to their aid. This would be the first time that any soldiers in Robert E. Lee's Army combated Federal African American soldiers in Virginia.
