DETAILED DESCRIPTION: This painting captures the 39 year career of an Air Force Officer coupled with a 29 year career as a pilot with Trans World Airlines (TWA).
In the foreground, the 2nd Lieutenant is standing in the cockpit of a United States Air Force (USAF) T-37, the first airplane he flew in pilot training in 1961. In the background are all the other aircraft he will fly for the USAF, which are the T-33, C-141B, and the C-135B. After over 10,000 hours of cumulative flying time all over the world, the Lieutenant will progress in rank to Major General, indicated by the two stars in the lower left windshield of the T-37.
In the upper right hand corner, a Boeing 727 airplane is shown on final approach over the American flag, showing his patriotism while depicting his 29 year career with TWA. He retired as a Captain from TWA in 1997.
The General retired from the USAF in August of 1999. Mr. Mark Churms was commissioned by the General's wife and children to paint this collage as a gift to be presented by the family at his retirement ceremony. The purpose of this commission was to encapsulate the General's most interesting and exciting career while serving in two fields of aviation. The young Lieutenant stands proudly in the cockpit of his T-37 with humility, gratitude, and total satisfaction as he looks to the future where his distinguished career will lead him.
