BRIEF DESCRIPTION: USS Comfort II AH-6, Comfort class Hospital ship, with beds for 700 sick and wounded, entered service June 1944, crewed by US Navy with US Army doctors, nurses and medical staff. Here she is anchored off Okinawa taking on more patients from the battle of Okinawa as she prepares to head for Guam. At 10.41 pm April 28th 1945. Though sailing that night, fully illuminated with the obvious red cross clearly visible on the stack and sides, USS Comfort was brutally attacked by a Japanese kamikaze aircraft that hit amid ships where the operating rooms were located. 30 brave medical staff, nurses and patients were killed in the attack and nearly 50 wounded..
