BB-64, U.S.S. Wisconsin in World War II
8:02 am. March 18th 1945 Off Japan's Kyushu Island, Pacific Ocean
KAMIKAZE KILLER!
USS Wisconsin BB-64 blasts another Japanese kamikaze out of the cold sky and sends the twin engine Kugisho P1Y1 Ginga "Frances" crashing into the ocean 500 yards of the starboard beam. All available guns aim their barrels at the incoming attackers. Anti-aircraft guns of screening destroyers also protect the aircraft carriers, including USS Enterprise CV-6 and USS Langley CV-l27, seen here steaming in the distance.
IOWA CLASS BATTLESHIPS - ARMED TO THE TEETH
Armed with twenty 5"/38 caliber guns of the secondary battery and more than a hundred 40mm and 20mm guns, this Iowa Class battleship can direct a huge volume of lead and shrapnel into the path of any attacking enemy planes. The main battery of nine enormous 16"/50 caliber guns is reserved for larger targets and can fire huge projectiles to engage the enemy over 20 miles distant.
Launched from Philadelphia Naval Yard exactly two years after the Japanese attack on the Naval base at Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941, this new battleship acts as a huge AA gun platform to escort the fast carriers of Task Force 38 (TF-38). Many Japanese pilots find their graves in the blue Pacific Ocean as they strive desperately to sink the American fleet's aircraft carriers and warships. In the face of such determined suicide attacks the US Navy progresses relentlessly towards the Japanese homeland and final Victory.
BACK TO FIGHT AGAIN
USS Wisconsin BB-64 survives post war Navy mothballing programs to be refitted and see active service again in the Korean War and Persian Gulf War. She is finally decommissioned, at the end of 1991. On December 7th 2000, the 57th Anniversary her launch, USS Wisconsin arrives at the National Maritime Center 'Nauticus' in Norfolk, Virginia, where she is now on public display as a memorial to those who served.
