Iowa Class Battleships Prepare for War
The phrase "underway replenishment"
or "unrep" may not mean a lot to
some people. However, to the United States
Navy it is the keystone to strategic readiness
for its fleets around the world. The first
significant replenishment at sea occurred
in 1899 when two ships, the U.S.S. Massachusetts
and the U.S.S. Marcellas, transferred coal
to one another. Since then, many methods
have been tried and abandoned. Today, the
U.S. Navy is able to re-supply fuel for ships
as well as aircrafts. The advent of the helicopter
allows for the rapid transfer of other commodities
such as ammunition and cargo.
U.S.N. - World Naval Supremacy
During W.W. II, many regarded
the act of
underway replenishment as a secret
weapon.
No other navy in the world could
accomplish
this feat. Even today there are
several countries
with blue water navies that cannot
perform
underway replenishment. The Sacramento
class
ships were designed specifically
for the
purpose of re-supplying an entire
battle
group with fuel, weapons, and
food. This
procedure allows combat ships
to stay on
station for weeks on end and
not have to
return to port for vital supplies.
Cruise Missiles, Fuel Oil and Victory
During the Gulf War, the U.S.S. Sacramento,
her motto "Ready for service",
re-supplied many different classes of ships
and kept the fleet primed for any given situation.
Here we see the U.S.S. Wisconsin BB64 and
the U.S.S. Missouri BB63 ( 'Mighty Mo') being
provided with fuel and stores from the U.S.S.
Sacramento AOE1 as they moved through the
Arabian Gulf.
This simultaneous refueling of
two dreadnoughts
may never be accomplished again
due to the
retirement of the Iowa class
battleships.
