Violent summer typhoon rages in the Pacific Ocean, off Okinawa in 1945. USN Warships Fight Through Winds & Stormy Seas "While it happened over 55 years ago in W.W.II, I remember it as if it happened yesterday. We had just spent three weeks operating with Carrier Task Group 58.1 making air strikes on Okinawa. Admiral William "Bull" Halsey took over for Admiral Nimitz on May 28th, so we became the United States Navy Third Fleet. I was jolted awake in the middle of the night by a loud banging noise above deck on the fantail, which was right above my bunk. I thought for sure a torpedo or a Kamikaze had struck us because the ship was rocking violently. I jumped up and ran above deck and realized we were in a typhoon". Summer Typhoon Attacks The Fleet! "The noise we had heard was one of the amphibious rescue planes, which had flipped over onto the deck. Two cranes were down and the other Kingfisher floatplane was blown into the sea. It was almost impossible to stand up without holding on to something because the ship was still rocking. Luckily, only one crewmember was washed overboard. Our sister ship, U.S.S. Pittsburgh, lost its bow from the severe pounding of the waves. Three destroyers were sucked up and sank, losing their entire crew". Thanks to 'Bud ' Pearson & John Ford.
